Europe's Electricity Demand Set to Grow as Electrification Accelerates

Europe is entering a new phase of electricity consumption growth as the ongoing electrification of transportation, heating systems, industrial processes, and hydrogen production continues to reshape the region’s energy landscape.

 

According to the draft scenarios of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2026, electricity demand across Europe is projected to increase by approximately 20% over the next decade. Although overall final energy consumption is expected to decline thanks to improved energy efficiency, the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, data centers, industrial electrification, and hydrogen electrolysis will significantly boost power demand.

 

Meanwhile, energy storage is playing an increasingly important role in grid stability and renewable energy integration. Recently, EDF Power Solutions commissioned the Stockage Énergie Catalan (SEC) virtual power plant in Baixas, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of southern France.

 

 

The 28 MW project combines a 20 MW lithium-ion battery energy storage system with ten run-of-river hydropower plants providing a total of 8 MW of generation capacity. The entire facility is coordinated through an advanced real-time energy management platform developed by EDF’s R&D team, enabling optimized operation and enhanced grid flexibility.
